Tesla Model Y Experience

  • Very good driving experience
  • Very good user interface
  • Minimalist design
But,
  • Didn't come with charging cable. You may buy one from Tesla for $200.
  • Didn't come with mud flaps splash guard. You may buy just the front mud flaps from Tesla for $40.
  • Didn't come with garage door opener. You may purchase and get it installed for $350.
  • Didn't come with a front number plate attached but came with a mount separately that requires attaching to the front. Some may like the front look without the number plate. So this may not be an issue for many.
  • Didn't come with sunglass holder.
  • It is inconvenient to open the right door with left hand and left door with right hand
  • Head feels warmer than rest of the body, when high temp outside. You may buy roof shade from Tesla for $120.
  • Bumpy ride (may get better over time)
  • Uncomfortable seat (yet to find comfortable position)
  • No quick way to open glovebox. But one good thing is it has passcode lock option
  • No Apple car play / Android auto (One extra step to send address to car), but can connect phone via bluetooth to play music.
  • Needs premium subscription ($9.99+tax/month or $99+tax/year) to view traffic data which is available for free in google maps that is not supported by Tesla
  • No usb port (only usb-c port available. Wireless charging available as well. I don't have wireless charging option on my phone)
  • Cannot set both start and end time for off peak hours for charging
  • No seat cooling
  • Need left index or thumb plus another finger to open door comfortably. If carrying things in both hands, can't open door if only one or two adjacent fingers besides thumb are free. I could unlock (keyless) and open my previous non-Tesla car with just one finger.
  • Since the roof is all glass, the lights are located on the sides above the door and are not very bright
  • I rub my skin at the back of my hand against the center console every time I buckle and unbuckle my seat belt, as the gap between the center console and me is very narrow. It is slightly annoying.
  • If you are some one who disables the bluetooth on the phone most of the time or closes the Tesla app as it drains your phone battery, you need to remember to turn bluetooth on and/or open the Tesla app before you reach your car if you plan to use the phone key and don't want to wait outside the car while you turn on bluetooth and/or open Tesla app. I call this the "Embarrassment mode" - Every now and then phone key doesn't work properly. You go to the car and try opening the door and it won't open. You will need to either open the app in the foreground or close and reopen the app or disconnect and reconnect the Bluetooth. Note: my phone keeps warning me about Tesla app using too much battery. If I close the app to save phone battery, then also I get to experience the embarrassment mode.
  • No Key Fob option for Model Y. The key fob option is available only for Model S and X. If you are some one who forgets to take the phone with you when you leave the car, you would be leaving the car unlocked (if you are using the phone key). If you think key fob for Model Y is available, please let me know in the comments.
  • Incoming calls cannot be answered using button/scroll on the steering wheel. Can be answered only by touching a button on the display screen, which is a distraction while driving.
  • It is not possible to lock the car, keyless, while standing next to the car. It may lock by itself after some time. In my old car, I could lock the car, keyless, by pressing the button on the door knob.
  • It is possible that even if the car is locked, if the phone is on one side, someone could unlock and open the door from other side of the car.
  • I am able to drive the car even when the phone key is not inside the car (when it is near by). I am wondering if someone can get in and drive the car if the phone key is within range of the car.
  • It is not possible to unlock the car keyless without opening the door. Many cars have the option to unlock by placing the hand on the door knob without opening the door.
  • Temperature cannot be controlled separately for the rear
  • Unable to turn on the interior lights when the car is not turned on. Especially when there is no one at the driver seat and you are in the back seat and want to turn on the lights, I don't know a way to do it. In other cars, you will be able to turn on the lights by reaching for the button on the roof of front seat.
  • Rear door window does not roll down completely. After complete roll down, 1/3 of the window is still up.

Note: The above information just my observation as of 12/1/2022. The prices mentioned here may not be accurate. Please do your own research to get accurate information.
