How to get rid of your landline telephone bill?
Are you paying for your landline phone? Do you want to be bill free and still enjoy the landline at home? Think no further. Here is a great solution. All you need is a google account and a one time investment of about $40. I am not selling this product. I am just sharing how I am saving money by not paying for monthly phone bill. Using Google voice, you can make a call to US numbers from anywhere in the world (from US, or from outside US) for free as long as you have internet access. Google allows you to buy credits to call to other countries (from anywhere). The cost to call varies based on the destination country. Example: Cost to call India (could be from US, India, or from anywhere with internet access) is approximately $0.01/min. You can port your existing number as well (Some times you may not be able to port. See step 1 for more details). You don't have to lose your existing number. Continue to use the same number and save on bill. You may skip step one, if you are not planning to port your existing number (if you want to get a new number)
Step 1: If you are planning to port your number to Google Voice, make sure Google allows porting for your carrier. Steps to verify if Google supports porting for your carrier
Work around: If Google does not support your carrier, you still might have a way to port to Google, The approach would be to port your current number to a supported carrier (eg: AT&T) and after a few days or a month, port it to Google Voice.
Disclaimer: I do not know if this works or have any drawbacks/issues and I have not tried this myself.

- Login to Google Voice
- Click link - "Get a Voice number" on the left navigation menu
- Click button - "I want to use my mobile number"
- Enter the number you want to port and click button - "Check for available options"
- If you see the link - "Port your number", you are good to go.
- If you see "Porting your mobile number to Google Voice is unavailable", Google does not support porting from your carrier. Either you will have to find a work around or get a new number

Step 2: Steps to follow to go bill free
- If you don't have a google account, sign up for one - Sign up for Google account
- Register for google voice - Sign up for Google Voice
- Buy a Voip device (OBi200 should be good). OBi does not need a computer. Another option would be to use GVMate, but GVMate needs a computer to connect to.
- Buy a phone, if you don't have one already (eg: corded phone or cordless phone)
- Once you have received your OBi device, follow the steps HERE and you are all set
